April 13 Did you know? Rob ZombieRob Zombie (born Robert Cummings on January 12, 1966) is a hard rock/ heavy metal musician, director, and writer. His dreadlocks, gruff vocal style and fascination with B-Movies have helped him become a distinctive element in American heavy metal. He is best known as founder, lead singer and songwriter for White Zombie. In recent years he has also established himself as a solo singer and as a director. His directorial career began with the horror, House of 1000 Corpses, and its sequel, The Devil's Rejects, released 2005. He is also coming out with another movie called El Superbeasto due out June 1, 2006 based on his comic book series The Haunted World of El Superbeasto. Did you know Robert Cummings is the older brother of Powerman 5000 front-man & vocalist Michael Cummings? ...oh, you did know that... well
Did you know Rob moved to New York to pursue a career in publishing. Mr. Cummings, supported himself through multiple jobs, including working as a cycle courier. Most famously he was a production assistant on Pee-wee's Playhouse, but he also worked as a designer on pornographic magazines. Maybe Rob had some influence on Mr. Herman's personal lifestyle (if you know what i mean...)
November 29 Jeff Beck: Did you konw?Jeff Beck (born June 24, 1944) is a British rock musician who played in a number of influential bands in the 1960s. Beck was born Geoffrey Arnold Beck in Wallington, London. Like many rock musicians in the early 1960s, he began his career working as a session guitarist. In 1965, Beck joined the Yardbirds essentially replacing the great Eric Clapton, when Clapton left the group for John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. It was during Jeff's tenure with the Yardbirds that they recorded most of their hits. In 1966, Jeff shared the dual-lead guitar role with Jimmy Page, now legendary guitarist for the band Led Zeppelin. Beck's tenure in the Yardbirds was a short one; he left after 18 months, partly for health reasons. The following year, Beck formed a new band, Jeff Beck Group, which featured him on lead guitar, Rod Stewart on vocals, Ron Wood on bass, Mick Waller on drums, and Nicky Hopkins on piano. The group produced two albums, Truth in 1968 and Cosa Nostra Beck-Ola the following year. Owing to friction within the band, Stewart and Wood left the group in 1969 to form The Faces. Wood later joined The Rolling Stones. Although you don't hear much about Jeff Beck he is one of the original guitarist to have invented heavy blues-rock riffs. You can find a lot of his influences on Led Zeppelin's albums. November 28 Kurt's Note: Did you know?Kurt Cobain's suicide note peace, love, empathy. Kurt Cobain I Love you. I love you! See Photo of Actual Letter Below
Famous Death's: Did you know?Jim Morrison (December 8 1943 - July 3, 1971) Born James Douglas Morrison, he was the lead singer and lyricist of the popular American rock band The Doors.
How did he die? In his bathtub at the age of 27; many fans and biographers have speculated that the cause of death was a drug overdose, but the official report listed "heart attack" as the cause of death.
Rumors of Morrison faking his own death comes from the fact that he is quoted as saying to his fellow band members that he wanted to fake his own death, and that he would come back and contact them under the alias "Mr. Mojo Risin", which is an Anagram of "Jim Morrison", and which Morrison had already referred to himself as on the title track of L.A. Woman.
Kurt Donald Cobain (February 20, 1967 - ca. April 5, 1994) was the lead singer and guitarist of the American rock band, Nirvana. How did he die? On April 8, 1994, Cobain's body was discovered in the spare room above the garage (referred to as "the greenhouse") at his Lake Washington home by Veca Electric employee Gary Smith. Smith arrived at the house that morning to install security lighting and saw the body lying inside. Apart from a minor amount of blood coming out of Cobain's ear, Smith reported seeing no visible signs of trauma, and initially believed that Cobain was asleep. Smith found what he thought might be a suicide note with a pen stuck through it beneath an overturned flowerpot. A shotgun, purchased for Cobain by Dylan Carlson, was found at Cobain's side. An autopsy report later concluded Cobain's death as a result of a "self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head." The report estimates Cobain to have died on April 5, 1994. In the alleged suicide note, ostensibly written to Cobain's imaginary childhood friend "Boddah", Cobain quoted a lyric from Neil Young's song "My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue)": "It's better to burn out than to fade away." Cobain's use of the lyric had a profound impact on Young, who recorded portions of his 1994 album Sleeps With Angels in Cobain's memory.
James Marshall "Jimi" Hendrix (November 27, 1942 – 18 September 1970) was an American musician, songwriter and virtuoso guitarist, widely hailed by fans and music critics as the best electric guitarist of all time. How did he die? On the morning of 18 September, 1970, Hendrix was found dead in the basement apartment of the Samarkand Hotel, London. He had spent the night with a German girlfriend, Monika Dannemann, and died in bed after taking a reported nine Vesperax sleeping pills and choking on his own vomit. For years afterwards Danneman publicly claimed Hendrix was alive when placed in the back of the ambulance (however her comments about that morning were often contradictory and confused, varying from interview to interview). Police and ambulance reports from the time, reveal that not only was Jimi Hendrix dead, when they arrived on the scene, but he had been for some time, the apartment's front door was wide open, and the apartment itself empty. His body was returned home and he was interred in the Greenwood Memorial Park, Renton, Washington, USA, although Jimi requested to be buried in England. Following a Libel case brought in 1996 by Hendrix's long-term English girlfriend Kathy Etchingham, Monika Danneman took her own life.
All of them died at age 27... November 25 Mark Chapman: Did you know?On December 8, 1980, in New York City, deranged fan Mark David Chapman assassinated former Beatle, John Lennon. Lennon and Ono returned to their apartment from recording Ono's single "Walking on thin ice" for their next album. At 10.50pm, their limo pulled up to the entrance of the Dakota. Ono got out of the car first, followed by Lennon. Beyond the main entrance was a door which would be opened and a small set of stairs leading into the apartment complex. As Ono went in, Lennon got out of the car and glanced at Chapman, proceeding on through the entrance to the Dakota. As Lennon walked past him, Chapman called out "Mr. Lennon." As Lennon turned, Chapman crouched into what witnesses called a "combat" stance and fired five hollowpoint bullets. One bullet missed, but four bullets entered John's back and shoulder. One of the four bullets fatally pierced his aorta. Still, Lennon managed to stagger up six steps into the concierge booth where he collapsed, gasping "I'm shot, I'm shot." Chapman stood there, holding his .38 Charter Arms revolver, which was pulled out of his hands and kicked away by Jose Perdomo who then asked "What have you done, what have you done?", to which Chapman replied "I just shot John Lennon." Chapman then calmly took his coat off, placed it at his feet, took out a book and started reading. Police arrived within minutes, to find Chapman still waiting quietly outside, reading a copy of J.D.Salinger's novel, The Catcher in the Rye. What you may not have known is: Earlier in the day, Chapman had shaken hands with Lennon and had asked him to autograph his newly-purchased copy of Lennon's new album Double Fantasy, a request which Lennon obliged. Chapman had been a fan of the Beatles, and Lennon in particular, for years. Following his nervous breakdown as a college student, however, Chapman became obsessed with Lennon to such a degree that he married a Japanese woman because she reminded him of Lennon's wife Yoko Ono (as of 2005, they were still married). Chapman was charged with second degree murder and was found competent to stand trial. It was expected that he would plead insanity; instead, he lodged a guilty plea. He was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison. He has been denied parole three times, in 2000, 2002, and October 2004. Prior to his parole hearings several reports were made of threats to his life, should he be released. November 24 Concerts: Did you know? This is a list of concerts i've been to over the past few years. I should have wrote down the list along time ago. It's hard to remember them all, but this is a few that I came up with...
& more.... (If I remember, i'll post 'em) November 23 Kurt Cobain: Did you know?Kurt Donald Cobain (February 20, 1967 –ca. April 5, 1994) was the lead singer and guitarist of the American rock band, Nirvana.
At school, Cobain took little interest in sports or most academics, focusing only on his art courses. He was friends with a gay student at his school, sometimes suffering physically at the hands of homophobic students for his friend, and for his small size, which led some to believe that he himself was gay. Although he once claimed in an interview with The Advocate that he was arrested for spray-painting a pro-gay slogan on a bank, Aberdeen police records show that the phrase he was arrested for in 1986 was actually "Ain't got no how watchamacallit." [4]
In a February 1992 interview with The Advocate, Cobain admitted that he thought he was gay while in high school and stated, "I could be bisexual. If I wouldn't have found Courtney, I probably would have carried on with a bisexual lifestyle." In his journals, he wrote that he was heterosexual, but wished he was gay just "to piss off homophobes" [5]. When Nirvana appeared on SNL in January of 1992, Cobain and Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic jokingly "made out" during the cast and crew farewells as the credits rolled. (Cobain and Novoselic bobbed their heads back and forth wildly as if in rapture; Novoselic and Dave Grohl(Foo's frontman) subsequently repeated the gesture.) The segment was cut from the show on further airings, replaced by the closing credits from the rehearsal taping, and never aired again. November 22 The Wall: Did you know?In The Flesh
Have a quick read through legendary lyrics written by the famous band, Pink Floyd. The following paragraph is an exerpt from Pink Floyd's 1979 Album, The Wall. The song is called "In the Flesh?"
"Are there any queers in the theatre tonight?
Get 'em up against the wall. And that one in the spotlight, he don't look right to me. Get him up against the wall. And that one looks Jewish, and that one's a coon. Who let all this riffraff into the room? There's one smoking a joint, and another with spots! If I had my way I'd have all of ya shot." ControversyCertain of the lyrics are inflammatory to various groups of people, including homosexuals, Jews, and Blacks. Heard out-of-context, one assumes that the song is a racist work. In fact, it is intended as a satire - not only does it mimic the loyal following of fans to musicians, it also mimics the prejudices against various groups; it would be considered ridiculous, for instance, to persecute those suffering from a bout of spots. Social EffectsWhile the song was intended as a satirical piece, during the filming of the corresponding sequence in The Wall, a number of the youths acting the parts of Pink's loyal cult members became considerably excited with the lyrics. Inadvertently, the film, and the song, spawned the group known as the Hammerskins, an extreme white racist group. November 21 Random: Did you know?Robert Van Winkle (born October 31, 1968), is better known as Vanilla Ice. He has the highest selling rap album to date.
Scott Alan Stapp (born Anthony Scott Flippen on August 8, 1973) is a singer and a former member of the band Creed. Scott used to use a potent chemical at dangerously high volumes to make his voice "raspier" eventually damaging his vocal chords.
Brian Hugh Warner (born January 5, 1969), is an American musician. Warner took light and dark aspects of American Pop culture, a culture in which serial killers and Movie Stars(Marilyn Monroe and Charles Manson) have equal notoriety, and merged them with his own personality, creating the persona of Marilyn Manson.
If you've been reading my 'Did you know?' blog, sorry I haven't been posting lately, busy busy.
Keep checkin' back for cool info on Music. Next month: Movie Stars! November 16 Adam Jones: Did you know?Adam Thomas Jones (born January 15, 1965) is best known as the guitarist for the band Tool. He is the creative mind behind the guitar riffs and music videos of Tool. Besides his reputation as a musician, Jones is also well respected as a visual artist. He directed and worked on all of Tool's music videos except for "Hush" and "Sober". Jones played violin in elementary school. He was accepted into the Suzuki program, and continued to play violin through his freshman year in high school. He then played a stand up bass for three years in an orchestra. In addition to playing in an orchestra, Jones played bass in a band called Eletric Sheep with Tom Morello of RATM and Audioslave. Both Morello and Jones did not receive traditional guitar lessons, but instead, learned from each other. Jones received a film scholarship but declined and chose to move to L.A. to apply at an art school instead to improve his sculpting and sketching abilities.Jones' studies began in 1983 at the Hollywood Makeup Academy by learning "straight make-up," because he thought it would help him. His focus of interest shifted to film, and he began to work as a sculptor and special effects designer where he learned the stop-motion camera techniques he would later apply in Tool's videos Sober, Prison Sex, Stinkfist, and Aenema. He graduated in 1987. Jones worked on several other big films in Hollywood doing makeup and set design, including Jurassic Park and Terminator 2. After Tom Morello introduced Jones and his friend Maynard James Keenan (vocals) to Danny Carrey in 1990, they - along with Paul d'Amour formed Tool. November 14 Tom Morello: Did you know?Thomas Baptist Morello (born May 30, 1964) is the guitarist of the band Audioslave, and formerly of Rage Against The Machine.
His mother, Mary Morello, is a founder of Parents for Rock and Rap, an anti-censorship group. His father was a Mau Mau guerilla, a Kenyan revolutionary who later was the first Kenyan delegate to the United Nations. Morello's uncle,Jomo Kenyatta, was the first elected president in Kenya. Here comes the exciting stuff...
In 1986 Morello graduated with honours from Harvard University with a degree in political science. He moved to L.A. with the intention of joining or starting a band. Already during his high school years, he had played in a band called Electric Sheep with Adam Jones, soon-to-be-guitarist for the experimental band, Tool. Morello introduced Jones to some of his future band-mates and was responsible for the emergence of Tool in its first formation.
Clapton: Did you know?Eric Patrick Clapton (born March 30, 1945) is a Grammy winning British guitarist and composer. Self taught, he is considered to be one of the greatest guitarists who ever lived. Nicknamed Slowhand, Clapton became one of the most respected and influential artists of the rock era, garnering an unprecedented three inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Clapton was born in Ripley, England, UK, as an illegitimate son of the 16 year old Patricia Molly Clapton and Edward Walter Fryer, a 24 year old Canadian pilot. Clapton's father returned to his wife in Canada before he was born. Young Clapton grew up with his grandparents, believing they were his parents, and that his mother was his older sister. Years later his mother married another Canadian soldier, moved to Canada and left Eric with his grandparents. When Clapton was 9 years old he discovered this family secret, and the experience became a defining moment in his life.
Clapton grew up a self-confessed "nasty kid." He studied stained-glass design at Kingston Art School, started teaching himself to play guitar at 15, and joined his first band at age 17. He stayed with his first band, the early British R&B outfit The Roosters from January to August 1963 and frequently jammed in London clubs with future members of The Rolling Stones.
November 13 Jimmy Page: Did you know?James Patrick Page, known as Jimmy Page, (born January 9, 1944) is widely considered one of the greatest and most influential guitarists in rock and roll. He was a founding member of Led Zeppelin and, prior to that, a member of The Yardbirds from late 1966 through 1968. Before these two groups however, Page was one of the most in-demand studio guitarists in England. While still a student, Page would often jam on stage at the Marquee with bands such as the Cyril Davis All Stars, Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated and with guitarists Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton. He was spotted one night by John Gibb of Silhouettes, who asked him to help record a number of singles for EMI, including "The Worrying Kind". It wasn't until an offer from Mike Leander from Decca Records that Page was to receive regular studio work. His first session for the label was the recording "Diamonds" by Jet Harris & Tony Meehan which went to Number 1 on the singles chart in early 1963. His landmark guitar solo from the song "Heartbreaker" (Led Zeppelin) has been credited by Eddie Van Halen as the inspiration for Van Halen's trademark 2-hand tapping technique. Robert Plant: Did you know?Robert Anthony Plant (born August 20, 1948) is a rock singer most famous for being the lead singer of one of the most influential rock bands of all time — Led Zeppelin. He is known for his powerful style with a wide vocal range that embodied folk/blues passion at its finest. Plant started his career singing in a variety of bands including Band of Joy. His early efforts met with no commercial success, but word quickly spread about the young guy with the powerful voice. Guitarist Jimmy Page was in search of a lead singer for his new band and met Plant after talking with a drummer who referred him to a show where Plant was singing. Plant and Page immediately hit it off with a shared musical passion and after Plant joined the band, they began their powerful writing collaboration with reworks of earlier blues songs. Plant brought along friend John Bonham, and along with Jimmy Page friend John Paul Jones, Led Zeppelin was formed in 1968. Their self-titled debut album hit the charts in 1969 and is widely credited as a catalyst for the heavy metal genre. Plant was influenced by J.R.R. Tolkien, which inspired some lyrics on early Zeppelin albums, most notably the hit "Ramble On" from the 1969 album, Led Zeppelin II. The passion for diverse musical experiences drove Plant and Page to explore the African continent, specifically Morocco, which most evidently culminated in the classic 1975 track, "Kashmir." They both revisited these influences during their reunion album No Quarter: Jimmy Page and Robert Plant Unledded in 1994. In his solo career, Plant again tapped from these influences many times, most notably in the 2002 album, Dreamland. The band's greatest success came with track, "Stairway to Heaven", an epic fantasy piece that draws influence from folk, blues, Celtic traditional music and hard rock among other genres. While never released as a single, the song has topped charts as the greatest song of all time on various polls around the world. Even though most of the lyrics of the song were written on the spot and have been spread through bootlegs, various groups have claimed that the song contained satanic messages that can be heard when it is played backwards. November 12 The White Stripes: Did you know?Jack "Three Quid" White (born John Anthony Gillis on July, 1975 in Detroit) is an American musician, producer, and actor. He is best known as the leader of the rock duo The White Stripes.
White's father and mother worked at the local Catholic church (as the maintenance man and cardinal secretary respectively), and White himself was an altar boy. According to the September 8, 2005 issue of Rolling Stone, this landed him a role at the age of ten in the movie The Rosary Murders, which was filmed at the church. Although White grew up in Mexicantown, the lower-middle-class Hispanic district of southwest Detroit, his musical preferences were not those of his classmates, who listened to electronica and hip hop. White, as a teenager, was already listening to the blues and 1960's rock that would influence him in the White Stripes. At fifteen, White began a three year upholstery apprenticeship with a family friend, Brian Muldoon. After working in various shops, he started a one-man business of his own, called Third Man Upholstery. The slogan of his business was "Your Furniture's Not Dead" and the color scheme was yellow, white and black — including a yellow van, a yellow and black uniform and a yellow clipboard. While "Third Man Upholstery" never lacked business, White claims that it was not profitable, due to his complacency about money and his business practices that were perceived as unprofessional, including making bills out in crayon and writing poetry inside the furniture.[1] White met Meg White in the mid-1990s, and they were married in 1996. He took her last name, and soon formed their band. They later divorced (2000), though well before becoming nationally famous. November 11 Fender: Did you know?Clarence Leonidas Fender ( August, 1909 - March 21, 1991) was an American luthier who founded Fender Electric Instrument Manufacturing Company.
Fender expressed interest in electrical engineering at a young age. He built and repaired radios as a hobby while in high school. After graduating from high school in 1928, Fender attended college, where he majored in accounting. After working as an accountant for the California Highway Department, Fender started a radio repair business, which he soon expanded into the manufacture of electric steel ("Hawaiian") guitars and amplifiers.
In 1950, he introduced first the Esquire and then the Broadcaster, the first standard electric guitars produced by Fender. Due to a trademark conflict with another musical instrument company (the Gretsch Broadkaster line of drums), the Broadcaster's name was quickly changed to Telecaster and perhaps the most enduring electric guitar ever was born.
Ironically, Leo Fender never learned to play guitar himself (although he had played saxophone in high school).
November 10 Rick Rubin: Did you know?Frederick Jay Rubin (born 1963) is a record producer and record label owner, best known for his work in the rap and heavy metal genres, and his combination of the two. Rick Rubin would be best described as the Steve Spielberg of the music industry today, producing some of the hottest bands and songs in history. He was one of the main co-founders of Def Jam records, which later became American Records. Rick Rubin was among the key figures behind the commercial and artistic rise of hip-hop, lending his signature rap/metal style to many of the biggest records of the pre-gangsta era. See if you recognize any of these big names:
Legendary musical genius Rick Rubin produced Slipknot's latest album, Vol. 3 The Subliminal Verses. Rick Rubin opened the doors for Slipknot, influencing them in making the masterpiece. More singing, piano and guitar solos, yet still takes you back to the roots of Slipknot with heavy songs like Three Nil and The Blister Exists. From brutally heavy album IOWA, to the beauty of Vol.3 - The Subliminal Verses. Vol. 3 is another chapter in Slipknot's history. November 09 Pink Floyd: Did you know?Roger Keith Barrett (born January 6, 1946 in Cambridge, England), known as Syd Barrett, was one of the founding members of the group Pink Floyd. The band Pink Floyd was formed in 1964. Barrett named the band after two obscure bluesmen, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. Barrett wrote most of the Floyd's early material; he was also an innovative guitarist. One of Barrett's most beloved trademarks was playing his Fender guitar by sliding a Zippo Lighter up and down the fretboard to create the mysterious, otherworldly sounds that became forever associated with the name "Pink Floyd." Barrett was only with the band between 1964-1968 when his psychodic condition worsened. One of the tales is that of Barrett appearing at the recording studio one day with a new song which he called "Have You Got It Yet". As he taught the group the song, it soon became obvious that he was changing the chords each time he played it through (hence the title) making it virtually impossible for them to learn it. November 08 NIN: Did you know?Trent Reznor (born Michael Trent Reznor May 17th, 1965), is an American Musician. Reznor is the founder and main creative force behind the band Nine Inch Nails. He is also the only official member of the band: different producers, engineers and musicians are assembled to assist him in writing and performing new material. Reznor writes all of the lyrics himself and is in sole control of the direction of the group. Trent went to college, studying Computer Engineering but soon dropped out. He got a job at a Recording Studio as a janitor where he was allowed to use the studio during off hours. This is wear he recorded the Album "Pretty Hate Machine" This leads me to believe that "One person can make a difference." and that some day when I record my own creative tracks, someone might just listen to them... October 02 The BIG Question on-stage!It's true! Kelso Brennan is no longer a free man. Sorry Ladies!!
With a lot of planning and a lot of sneaking around I was able to share this special occassion with Audioslave. About two weeks before the big day I contacted my buddy Tom Morello from Audioslave...(former Guitarist from Rage Against the Machine) and asked him for a favour. Tom called me on my cell phone and told me that himself and the band we're going to help me out... and did they EVER! They hooked me up with two backstage, all access passes to the concert. I'm talking "go-everywhere", dressing room access and all! I told Ashley (Bride-to-be) that I won the tickets on www.hob.com, (concert publications). It was an amazing concert and they played a lot of Rage and a lot of Soundgarden. Audioslave is Ashley's favorite band and I wanted to do something really special. We watched the concert up-close and personal. In fact we were even on stage, sitting on the tops of the speakers, watching the band do what they do best. Chris Cornell finished his acoustic set of "Black Whole Sun" and "I am the Highway" then I was introduced onstage. Chris said: "I would like to invite my Buddy Kelso to the stage..."
When I got on stage I could feel thousands of eyes staring at me. I clenched the microphone and yelled "Edmontonnnnnn!" The crowd went nuts! "I want to introduce you to a very special lady, My girlfriend Ashley Kraus." Ashley had her hands over her face and she was shaking as she walked to the center of the stage. I said "I can think of no better way to ask the love of my life to spend eternity together than to do it on stage in front of tens of thousands of people with the BEST FUCKING BAND IN THE WORLD." The roar of the crowd was more piercing on the ears than the concert itself. I pulled the ring out of my back pocket, got down on one knee and said "Ashley Kraus, Will you marry me?" ....how could she say "no"? She jumped into my arms and gave me the biggest hug. Tom Morello grabbed the microphone, congratulated us and gave me a HUGE bottle of Champagne.
When we walked off stage we were interviewed by Audioslave's Videographer. They asked Ashley if she had any clue about what was happening, to which she responded "Of course not". I took them through the process of how I contacted Tom and how much preparation went into the event. The video will be available for everyone to watch on my website soon.
After the concert was over Ashley and I headed backstage for another surprise. I had an 11"X14" black and white picture of us framed. The white mat border read "Best wishes from Audioslave" and was signed by each member of the band. It will be a great memory to hang on the wall in our house.
Fell free to check out all of the pictures on my MSN Space, stay tuned for a new website that I will be making and please leave a comment at the bottom.
Thanks Very Much...
Kelsey and Ashley
